Fashion Buffet: Animal Edition

I'm late! Sorry folks - I was having too much Halloween fun :). Hope these adorable little guys make up for it.

Kitty Cam:

This happened a couple of weeks ago, but I wanted to save it for this wonderful animal-centric post. Anthology Film Archives hosted the first (annual? Hopefully?) New York Cat Art Film Festival: Chat D’œuvres. The title is a play on words – “chat” means “cat” in French, and “œuvres” essentially means the works of an artist. I like it! Anyway, the festival showed over 20 films, some short (Only My Cat Understands Me) some long (The Pink Panther), all featuring the glorious feline. Proceeds from the festival benefited KittyKind, an all-volunteer cat rescue and adoption group, so the event was well worth it! And look, Kitty Leia there is wearing a fabulous headpiece, validating her place in a fashion post :).

Sweet Sweaters

Back in October, New Zealand was crippled when a cargo ship ran aground spilling over 350 tons of oil into the ocean. The accident has killed over 1300 birds, including New Zealand’s famous blue penguins. To help the wildlife, a yarn store in Napier, NZ put a call out for knitters the world over to send them sweaters for penguins! They uploaded the pattern and instructions on their website, and the sweaters began pouring in. The sweaters will act as a way to keep the birds warm until they can be scrubbed clean, as well as preventing them from ingesting oil as they clean themselves. What a lovely way to help out wildlife and keep a crafter busy J.
Cat Couture

I showed you a mouse fashion designer, well now I’m telling you about a cat fashion designer! Japanese cat fashion designer Iwasa Takako, has put out a book of photography featuring some of her amazing cat designs...and of course the lovely good sports who have to wear them. The book is called Fashion Cats, and please, for the love of God go look at the cover on Amazon! I discovered this gem of a book when attending the Design*Sponge book signing party in Asheville at Malaprop's. (More on that later!) My friend Sara and I were rolling while paging through these hilarious kitties wearing everything from country bonnets to fur stoles. This book is a must-have for any cat lover!

Costumed Canines

And last, but not least, I give you the costumed
animals of Halloween-loving owners. NYC held its 21^st annual Halloween Dog Costume Parade in Tompkins Square, and thank God photographers were on hand. Clever owners costumed their pooches in everything from Princess Beatrice (shown) to Lady Gaga to Donald Trump. If you’re in need of a pick-me-up today, I highly recommend a stroll through these photos. You just can’t beat a Yorkie dressed as Edgar Allen Poe’s raven or a Corgie dressed as a metro bus! Hope everyone had a safe and happy Halloween!

Freakin' Funny Fashion of the Week: Outer Skin

Japanese designer Kunihiko Morinaga just debuted his latest collection at Tokyo Fashion Week. The Japanese are known for their dramatic silhouettes, be they architectural in nature or exaggeratedly baggy. I hadn’t seen anything like this before though, as raved about by Susie Bubble on her blog. He's created the shapes with plastic moulding and fabric, for a decidedly wearable top, don't you think? Though the designs are definitely unique, I think we’d all be hard pressed to find someone in our circles of friends willing to wear a shirt that makes you look like the bust of a Greek statue.

Hey, I could be wrong though. Maybe you want to carry around an extra stomach! What say you?

Fashion Buffet: High Collab Edition

Happy Friday! The weather is crisp and sunny, I'm home from work and I'm about to put on Dirty Harry while I start on Sadie's Halloween costume. Can't beat that. The costume will be easy and awesome, and of course you'll see pictures. My costume needs a little tweaking, but I hope to have it squared away by tomorrow. But before we dive head first into the weekend, let's fill our bellies with some fashionable treats. Line forms here!

Versace x H&M

It’s that time again – H&M collaboration time! This go it’s with mega brand Versace, of skintight dresses and loud colors fame. Donatella famously said a while back that she would never do one, because to mix the high (Versace) with the low (H&M) would "confuse the brand." But money talks I guess - the collection launches November 17. Based on the buzz, it’s going to be BIG. While I do enjoy the direction Donatella (and Christopher Kane) are taking the brand lately, with that sort of nod to the Gianni glory days while still keeping things fresh, I would never say that Versace has been my style. That doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate it though – God knows I’d love to hit the town in a 1-shoulder electric orange mini sometimes, but not in this lifetime. The price points are well above H&M’s normal line, with around $249 for the collab’s sparkly mini dresses, but of course, well, WELL below Versace’s price points too. In looking at the ads and pictures that have been released, it does seem that this collab has got mass appeal, originality, design quality and that “keeping up with the Joneses” allure that should make it a sell out collection. (There's even palm frond prints and Greek key trim, making it unmistakably Versace.) And best yet? Graphic print suits for dudes! Check out more photos here - what say you?

Piper-Heidsieck x Jean Paul Gaultier

Banana Republic x Clos du Bois

The bubbly pictured at left is the mastermind behind French champagne (redundant) house Piper-Heidsick and French designer Jean Paul Gaultier. You know, Madonna's famous cone bra:). Fitting that the 2 have teamed up to create a limited edition shom-pahn-ya featuring fishnets and a boudoir mask. Doubtful this makes it taste any better, but a JPG seal does make pretty much anything sexier. And the bottles at right are from a Banana Republic & Clos du Bois collaboration...why? I couldn't tell you. But look! pretty sketches by BR's Simon Kneen! The cabernet sauvignon sells for $18.99 and the chardonnay for $16.99. So, affordable. But still...! Chardonnay! (Riesling girl here...)

Chocolate Warrior

Speaking of wine, how about some chocolate to go with it? The confection-covered lady at left is 2005 Miss France winner Cindy Fabre. She’s wearing an outfit of over 300 chocolates designed by Benjamin Brass and constructed by Puyricard, a French chocolate company. Yum! It was to promote Salon du Chocolat, a yearly trade fair for the international chocolate industry. This year it was held in Aix en Provence, pretty much where my head goes every time I daydream. I think it's kind of funny that they made her look all gladiator-ish. Just doesn't seem to go with exquisite designer chocolates, but maybe that's just me. And I wonder if the chocolates were frozen first? Or the room was really cold? Chocolate melts at body temperature, just sayin.

New Icon: Miss Piggy

Back in January I alerted you to the awesome fact that Miss Piggy would be playing a Vogue editor in the upcoming Muppet movie! It seems she's having quite a moment these days, as her latest venture has her starring in an InStyle editorial. Here she is in a Prabal Gurung dress (left) and Jason Wu dress (right). She's even wearing Brian Atwood shoes!!! I love how the designers were so serious about their creations, with Wu stating he really thought the empire waist would complement her figure. Hilarious. And to to that off, she's also got a MAC collection coming out as well! Hers launches November 14, well before Daphne Guinness for MAC. I'm sure it will be full of pretty pinks and luscious lip products to smooch her Kermie with. At least I hope, because girlfriend is not workin' that Gene Simmons look.

Just under 2 hours from where I live is a gem of a town in the Blue Ridge mountains where bratwurst and Bulldogs peacefully coexist. (U of Georgia Bulldogs, that is!) I'm talking about Helen, GA, where the dude and I visited last Memorial Day weekend. The shot above is the view from Hwy 17 coming into town. Too. Stinkin. Cute.

Why yes, the entire town is a re-created Alpine village, rife with cobblestone streets, lederhosen tees and authentic German cafes! Up until the 60s it was a remote mountain town surrounded by Cherokee land, but now with its Deutschland makeover, it's a tourist destination! Kitschy? Yes. Deterrent? Not in the least! I LOVED it. It's almost theme park-like, but boasts loads more charm.

I wasn't exactly sure what the deal with this place was, but based on the sign, it appears to be a park. With bears. I didn't want to venture in and see if they actually were keeping bears enclosed in a tiny Georgian town - too sad. I will say this does seem somewhat authentic though. While visiting Bern, Switzerland (in the German-speaking part of the country), we did happen upon a bear pit smack dab in the middle of town. Like, a giant hole in the ground, with rails at the top, filled with bears. No zoo, no cage, no warning. Just, bear pit. It made me sad - I'm sure they'd much rather be relaxing at home on the Gurten mountain than gawked at by tourists all day long. So, maybe this bear obsession is some German quirk I've never heard of.

A popular thing to do in Helen is go tubing. While we weren't in a tubing mood that weekend, I did snap a picture of some folks relaxing on the Chattahoochee River. Yes, THAT Chattahoochee. I know - it's a real river! It exists! You can only imagine my delight, and of course the ensuing "Way down yonder on the Chattahoochee, never knew how much that muddy water meant to me!" which was incessant at times. The dude LOVED that, let me tell ya :). The building pictured is a restaurant, so you can still get some river action if you don't want to get wet.

Helen is also famous for having the longest Oktoberfest in the south! We had planned to go this year, but you know how that is - you get busy and before you know it, Oktoberfest is over! We did,

however, check out Old Heidelberg, the town's beirgarten! We were milling around some shops downtown, and I hear a band playing The Beatles. Naturally, like Pavlov's dog, I immediately ran outside to sing along. The band was playing on an outside stage at the bar! The next thing I knew, we were downing some cold ones out of a boot, buying rounds for veterans, and having more fun than should be allowed on a Sunday afternoon :). You can bring back any of the mugs pictured (yes, we got all of them) for discount refills, at any time. Nice! (Hey, I was content with my mug, but the dude had to have the boot. And then he found out you could get a real glass boot, so he had to have that too. It comes in a box that actually says "DAS BOOT," so it was pretty worth it just for that haha.)

This place also boasts the best soft pretzel EVER. As you can see, it's far larger than my outstretched hand, comes with beer cheese dipping sauce, and costs like $3. The dude said he was fine and wasn't going to have any of mine. Before I knew it, he'd ordered his own :). Old Heidelberg, while it does have a happenin' biergarten/pub on street-level, it also has a great restaurant upstairs, run by a German chef. A few hours later we nibbled on some items ending in "schnitzel" that were fantastic. The dude and I visited the real Heidelberg in 2008, so it was neat to find this place. Also great - the band! Love this sign they posted :). We will be back for sure!

Back Pocket Post: My Zara Haul!

Back in September, I was contacted by Zara to participate in the launch of their online store in the US. Squee! Zara has always been one of those stores that I loved, but actually didn't own anything from. Since I don’t live near a Zara, I was relegated to visiting them in fabulous travel destinations. And it always seemed some other trinket or must-have piece of clothing would take precedence and I’d return home Zara-less again. And I’ll admit – over the past couple of years, I had kinda forgotten about them! But, when I got that email (well, first I thought it had to be a mistake – I honestly thought this…like, they had transposed some letters in some other girl’s email who has a fashion blog with like a million visitors daily and gotten me instead), of course my interest was piqued again. Normally I get a little annoyed…or ok, jealous, when all these blogs I read have girls touting their latest killer handbag, “courtesy of Foley & Corinna” or their fabulous dress, “courtesy of Miu Miu” – and I’m not saying I still don’t feel that way. But I can’t hate too much now, since I AM ONE OF THEM. Check out the items I picked below.

Polka Dot Blouse

The email claimed that I was “an influential person in the fashion community” – what the what!? Why thank you, Zara – you made my year! I didn’t know the background of the company, but a fashionable friend filled me in. Apparently it was started by a young Arab woman who graduated with an engineering degree. After a couple of years in that industry, she got burned out and wanted to do something different – so she opened a store, Zara, and the rest is history. They have stores all over the world, but until last month, those in the USA couldn’t shop online.

Let me tell you about the experience. First, it was very flattering, and they sent all of us this great postcard book of photographs representing each of the 50 states. Those of us included in the launch were invited to shop online a day before the site went live to the general public, and get some free merch! For a day I was actually above the general public - ha ha! Again, this whole time I’m thinking it must be a mistake – that my code would be invalid and/or that my items wouldn’t get shipped or something to negate my excitement. But, 2 days later (yes, only 2 days!) my package arrived. It was very beautifully wrapped - everything about the site just exudes class.

Organic Striped Tee

I was also very impressed with the quality of the clothing. The tee I got (left) was a very thick and sturdy knit, but incredibly soft. And yes, for those of you rolling your eyes at me getting ANOTHER Breton striped tee, don’t – this one’s organic, so it’s different! Ha ha. But really, I’ve realized I kind of treat those shirts as my neutral. A thin, navy stripe is my version of basic black, and I pair them with everything. My favorite one I’ve worn to death and it’s starting to look a bit threadbare – even my mom suggested I put it down! Hopefully this one will become my new favorite. The green blouse above is supremely cute in person, and zips up the back! Polka dots are very on-trend for fall, but at the same time, it’s a very classic top. I can see it taking me from work to cocktails for years to come.

High Heeled Mocassin

And the shoooooes! I don’t know if you can tell from the picture, but they have a triangular heel – to die for! I’ll admit I did jump on the heeled loafer bandwagon, but wanted to get something a little wacky. It was between those and the silver beauties at right, which are also to die for. I just may have to order them anyway, since I wear oxfords so much. One thing that I wish they did was carry shoes in ½ sizes. I ended up going a full size up from my normal size based on reviews I read and the fact that I’d rather my shoes be too big than too small. So, they are a wee bit big, but nothing some Dr. Scholl’s can’t fix I’m sure.

Patent Bulcher

It was extremely hard to pick my items – Zara really has something for everyone, with several lines each for man, woman and child, and very reasonable prices. I don’t mind paying a little bit more for something that is higher quality, and Zara is definitely that. They have definitely made a regular customer out of me. I love that this brand really gets it – they echo the runway trends without outright copying them (hello, Forever 21) because they still meld everything with their existing aesthetic. The result is really stylish, really wearable clothes that you won’t find at every Target and Old Navy on the block. (And for the record, I did get these items for free, but the love letter was all of my own doing!)

Fashion Buffet: Back Pocket Beauty-full

I just couldn't let another week roll by without giving you a Fashion Buffet! This week's theme is all about face fashion....and hand fashion! Since one of my best friends is getting married today, and she loves the U2 song "It's a Beautiful Day," AND I'm the official bridal party makeup artist ;), I thought it fitting that today's Fashion Buffet be beauty-centered.

Here's to a wonderful party tonight, and a wonderful life together, dollface. I can't wait to see you in your dress!!

Ok, down to beauty business! I realize some of these items aren't hot off the presses (hence the back pocket-ness), but they're still fun, and delicious. Let's eat!

There's a Line Out the Dior For These

Introducing, adhesive eyeliner patches from Dior! See what I did there with my title? Line... eyeliner...door...Dior? I kill me. The pack includes 4 pairs of velvet eyeliner patches and glue, meant for application above or below the lash line. With these dramatic shapes, some with crystals, you’re sure to make quite the statement sporting these babies. (And for $60, the statement better be yielding me free drinks!) I love, love, love eye makeup, but I’ll confess: I have never worn fake eyelashes! I know – that is a real shocker for those of you that know me well. I think I would need to dip my toe in that water first before trying glue-on eyeliner, but I’m totally game if someone wants to do it for me J. Would any of you try these? If so, what’s the ideal scenario for wearing them? Date night, girls’ night, alter ego night, pole vaulting competition – you know, the usual.

Nailed by Smurfs

Oh, Katy. We can always count on you for nail inspiration. Yes, that’s Katy Perry’s hand again – remember the royal mani she tweeted? This was in honor of the Smurfs movie premiere, of which she was the voice of Smurfette. (By the way, boy did that movie pass the world by – I knew it was coming out, but don’t remember hearing a single thing about it. Did anyone see it? I would ask if it was good but I know it couldn’t have been ha ha.) You gotta love a girl who still likes to have fun with her look. Speaking of Katy, she’s got a new fragrance coming out. Her first one, Purr, will now have a sassy counterpart called….you guessed it, Meow. Wonk, wonk.

My Goodness, My Makeup!

The wackadoo pictured at left is the inimitable Daphne Guinness, as in THE Guinness. What a life - an heiress with unlimited beer! She’s become quite a fixture on the fashion scene lately, known for her skunk-striped hair and couture wardrobe. She was a big fan of McQueen, and in fact even bought the designer’s entire collection that was owned by the late Isabella Blow. While her style may be a bit extreme for some, there’s no denying she has a love of fashion and a style all her own. But, this is a beauty post, right? So, following in the footsteps of other style icons like Cyndi Lauper, Lady Gaga and Barbie, Daphne Guinness will also have her own MAC makeup collection. I totally used to be a MAC fiend, but their power over me has vastly fizzled. I am quite intrigued to see what this collection brings though. WWD reports it will center around “rich, seasonal hues” and launch on December 26 – Boxing Day! Would you take makeup advice from Daphne?

Nail Magentism

Calling all nail fanatics! There’s a new fad in town and you won’t want to let it pass you by. We’ve had the Minx craze, crackle craze, nail art craze and now…MAGNETIC nails! Sephora recently added the British nail brand nails inc. to its repertoire and they’ve come out with a very cool concept. (Can I also swoon over their polish names, all named after British-isms? Kensington top coat, Piccadilly Circus *beet red* and Belgrave Place *deep cobalt purple*? LOVE.) Anyway, so here’s the deal with magnetic polish: it contains metallic particles that react when a magnet is held over the polish. Basically, apply the polish, hold the magnet (contained in the bottle’s cap) over the nail for 10-15 seconds, and a groovy pattern appears. So far Sephora just has 2 colors available, Trafalgar Square (chrome, pictured) and Houses of Parliament (purple). It’s $16 a bottle, but I am DYING to try this. I think it’s wacky enough to get you noticed, but not so crazy that it’s weird. Would anyone else do this?

I am currently catching up on London's & Paris's fashion weeks (sorreee, I was on vacation!), but I *believe* I have seen every single collection from New York for Spring/Summer 2012. All of them.

Yeah! Many, many of them I watched live on YouTube, or at least very shortly after they debuted. I gotta tell ya, the live streaming Tube channel of NYFW was amazing. You even got to see the celebs and editors that were milling around beforehand. (I, of course, was more enthused with seeing Hamish Bowles than Mr. Kardashian...) The only thing that was a bummer, was the fact that once the runway show started, the sound in the tent was cut and the channel's own soundtrack took over. It was fine for the 1st couple of shows I watched, but then the acid jazz for EVERY.SINGLE.SHOW started to get really old. I think the music is such an important part of the presentation, and I'm guessing the designers feel this way too! So why did you jip us, LiveRunway!?

But I digress. I'd like to lay out the big trends we'll be seeing next Spring. I know - it's so cruel. I wore my trench coat and brought an umbrella today, and here I am goading our senses with talk of sunshine. But, I have to :).

I'm Alive!

Yes, I'm alive, dear readers. In fact, I made this!

I'm quite pleased with how it came out. Here's my process when making things like this:

Go to craft store, coupon in hand.
Refer to list I've made of what to get.
Put 3x as much stuff in cart as what is on the list.

I had an idea that I wanted to do a fabric-y wreath, wrapped with yarn and felt. But then, how to incorporate all this other GREAT stuff I got? I was so frustrated too because I wanted a straw wreath, but couldn't find one. But since I changed directions, I'm so happy I got this one - it's much more spooky, no?

I painted the one skelly orange, stripped the purple leaves from a single branch and grouped them how I wanted, and used hair clips!! for the small purple spiders (at 8 & 4 o'clock). As for the big mama spider, hanging it from the top was the dude's idea! I had it on the wreath at first, but wasn't really digging it. I think it looks much more brooding that way - team work! To suspend her, check out this totally MacGyver method: I used a thin paint brush! I glued the bristles to the back side of the spider (it's hollow). Then I put glue on the handle little by little, wrapping black yarn up as I went. Then I hot glued the tip and shoved it inside the wreath, wrapping a wire knot I made around it as well. Voila - spooky hanging spider.

And, the fact that it's also a Clemson-colored wreath was purely coincidental! But I'll take it! Really I just wanted something with a little more personality than black & orange, so purple was a logical color choice...for me at least :). And who says you can't have glitter and butterflies for Halloween!

FNO: Not a dirty acronym

Last night New York kicked off Fashion Week with Fashion's Night Out, an initiative started by the Queen Bee 3 years ago. Initially it was a vehicle to pump money back in the fashion industry's pockets due to the economic downturn. But now that everything's back to normal (Right!? No one's out of work and we are all debt free!), it's just become a big party. Ain't nothin' wrong with that!

There's pop-up shops galore, celebrity appearances, and all the hippest shops and designers get theme happy and create special cocktails, games, or anomalies like Michael Kors dancing with the Rockettes! Anna Dello Russo was hanging at Macy's (she's designed the newest INC collab!), Samuel L. Jackson showed up at Armani, Prabal Gurung showed up at Saks, Alexander Wang and Donald Glover (!!) buddied up at Bloomingdale's, and Estelle sang with Diane von Furstenberg at her shop, among dozens of others that you probably don't care about.

Some complain that it's just a big booze fest laden with stiletto-clad 20-somethings looking to score free food and tote bags (very true), but others (like me) accept it for what it is - a fashion party! Yes, some of it can be a bit trite, overdone and cloying, but it's also a GREAT thing. It lets fashion lovers mingle with their heroes. It brings people together to celebrate fashion. It kicks off Fashion Weeks worldwide in a way only the USA can. And let's face it, it DOES pump money back into the economy. I'd be much more likely to put down $200 on a blouse at Michael Kors if the man himself was actually there giving me the ok. (Also, the aforementioned booziness helps LOADS.)

My fair city of Greenville had piss poor participation last night. A couple of years ago, several of the higher end shops participated. This year, I found ONE! Charleston did it up with a handful, as did Columbia. But ONE guys!? Come on! And it was Belk at the mall - does that even count?! You have to officially apply and sign up with FNO to participate, so there may have been some unofficials, but they weren't listed online. I contacted several of my go-tos to see if they'd be participating, but no dice. One didn't even know what FNO was. !!!!

So, mark my words: next year, things will be different. If I have to organize everything at every shop in town (or ok, the ones I like :), I'll do so. We can't be falling by the wayside here G-ville! There are so many fashion lovers in this town - we need something like this to come together that's less staid than a fashion show, and more interactive than a trunk show. Anyone with me? To the Bastiiiiiiiiille!

Fashion Buffet: Getting Wet Edition

The buffet is a little later than normal (or is it just reeeally early?) but it’s a goodie. This weekend was very productive for me. I finished a season of Crime 360, snapped some pictures of animals from the couch, dropped the leaves on our kitchen table and filled the rest of the time up with naps. Yes, I am wife of the year. Did anyone accomplish anything more than that this weekend? I dare you to try.

Flip Flops for a Cause:

There are some you out there that are flip flop fanatics. I am not one of you. J But no judgment, honest! So get a load of these artsy looking thongs. Have you fully absorbed them yet? Good. Now guess how much they are. Not $18, not $180 but $18,000! Yes, that’s right – these flip flops here cost more than my car! has long been a favorite of the yoga set. They have a new store in NYC outfitting women in and out of the gym. (I like that their whole line is designed by female athletes, so you know the details and fit are actually what you need.) While you can get the requisite sports bras, tennis skirts and leggings, the store is also offering something that is great for anyone, active or not: water resistant jeans! Actually, they have a whole line of these pants, exclusive to Athleta, including skinny jeans, bootcut jeans, corduroys and cargos. Genius. Who hasn’t wished their pants wicked water when caught in a downpour running errands? Wet denim is so heavy, and seems to stay wet ALL DAY. These pants, starting at $148, sound well worth the money for me. What say you – would you try them?

As if Louis Vuitton needed another market to get into, they’ve dipped into the honey business. In 2009 they installed hives on the roof of their headquarters in Paris, and now they are enjoying their first harvest from these designer bees. Of course, LV honey, called Miel de la Belle Jardiniere, also comes with exclusivity. It’s PARISIAN! For now, LV is only gifting it to family and friends, but I’m sure in due time we’ll see jars of it for sale at Neiman’s and Harrods – people will buy anything with a designer label on it.

Y’all know I’m a sucker for wacky shoes – well, LOOKING at them. Kobi Levi, the dude responsible for these glorious shoes, is at it again. And God bless him! Not for the fashion faint of heart, these coffee pot shoes resemble actual hot coffee being poured out of them. If I were going as a Starbucks heiress or a couture barista for Halloween, I can’t think of better shoes to go with the costume. What do you think of these babies? NEWS ALERT: A 5.8 earthquake happened earlier today in the DC area. I felt it at my desk in South Carolina! Friends felt it up in NYC, and a guy I know in Atlanta felt it as well. A 5.8 quake is no joke - no wonder we all felt it on the east coast! Did anyone else feel it? Did anyone else think their chair was just spontaneously collapsing like I did? Strange days, my friends.

There's a pet spa & daycare in NYC called The Salty Paw who holds an annual Puppy Prom! They raise money for animal charities (yay) and, of course, crown the 2 best dressed dogs as Prom King and Prom Queen. Pictured is Prom Queen Holly, who's wearing a tutu from Century 21 (ok, I own clothes from there...).

Here's Prom King Bandit, wearing one of his owner's designs. I love it! Is that a crushed velvet fez?!?! Obviously leery of Bandit's ladies' man reputation, Holly's owners had this to say: "My husband and I had a talk with her prom date. No funny business — she's not that kind of girl." Another guest was heard saying that since she never went to her own prom, this was her way of having that experience. Um, OKAY.

Anyway, is this pretty ridiculous? Yes!

Would I participate? ~~No!~~ Maybe!

Either way, it's for a good cause and it's a hoot, so, no harm done, right? Long live the king and queen, and may their reign never be tarnished by unscooped poop or public licking.

Fashion Buffet: Making the Rounds Edition

It's been a busy week for non-writing and non-fun related activities, which makes this weekend all the more sweet! It's high time for a Fashion Buffet, and I'm here to offer you some sweets of my own with this week's edition. Let's roll!

Uniqlo, a fantastic fast fashion brand from Japan (which the dude is even a fan of!), has started a new venture in New York City: a roller rink! The High Line Rink, so named because of its proximity to the High Line train (this pic was taken from the train) is sponsored by Uniqlo and a group called Friends of the High Line, which counts Susan Sarandon as a supporter. Everyone from derby girls to skate dancers were at the grand opening, and it promises to be a frequent hipster destination through the end of September. You can rent your skates, safety equipment, and even socks, and of course buy Uniqlo merch while you're there. Though I love the idea, I have to admit, THAT'S it?!? It's literally a high school track on concrete surrounded by construction zone barriers. You expect people to pay $12 for THAT? (Oh but trust me, they will.) I hear there's this huge park in NYC called Central Park with TONS of paths for skating. I even heard it's free too! Just sayin'.

I realize some of you may already be on top of these stories, but alas, I've been working on this post for over 2 weeks! I'll tell you why in a second. So, we all know Express - mall staple and sister to The Limited. Well they recently held a fashion show in Times Square in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record. (Mmmmm...Guinness....) They staged the largest runway show ever, asking anyone and everyone to join in. Participants, or "models for a minute" were given t-shirts and became a part of a record breaking 1,243 models in a single runway show. Everyone from tourists to NYPD officers to The Naked Cowboy participated. Here's where I get sad. One of the first times I went to NYC, the friend I was staying with lived RIGHT off Times Square (nightmare!). I stumbled upon The Naked Cowboy, not knowing a thing about him, and of course, had to get a picture with him. And it's a hilarious picture! I also pissed him off because I told him, being from Ohio, he was indeed NOT a real cowboy. How did I know? I'm from Texas, dammit! We know cowboys. Here he is in all his naked glory:

So yeah, SAD TROMBONE because I can't find that picture ANYwhere. But, glancing at his (headache-inducing) website, I had to smile. Not only does he read at least 50 books a year, he spends at least 4 hours a day writing - check out his book, Determination: The Legend of the Naked Cowboy! If THAT wasn't enough, The Naked Cowboy is also a REVEREND! He'll marry you in Times Square for $499! If that's not romance, I don't know what is. And lastly, if you want to know how YOU can be a Naked Cowboy (or Cowgirl), he's franchising, folks. According to him, you'll be an "income earning machine!" Thank you, Naked Cowboy, for this hilarious look into your life. Keep up the good work, and we shall ever be grateful for it.

Remember the Sephora same-day delivery story? Well I thought this was pretty neat too. Two of NYC's Sephora locations (with probably...hopefully? more cities to follow) are offering in-store manicure services. They've partnered with XpresSpa, which corners the market on airport nails. Since Sephora now offers tons of nail art options, this is something the nail studios are honing in on. You know, like this!

Pretty cool, huh? Prices range from $22 to $75, and you can either go for all 10 or pay per nail. They also give you a sheet to take home so you can recreate the look yourself. I'm not gonna lie - I would love to rock one of those animal prints - at least on my bling finger!

Picture Page: Charleston Days 2 & 3

Yaaay! It's time for another revisitation of one of my favorite cities, Charleston, SC. Since I grew up so close to the beach until I moved to Greenville, it was easy to take that proximity for granted. Now whenever I visit, I'm sure to soak up as much as possible. We left off on Day 1 munching on Philly Cheesesteak Spring Rolls and drinking the local spirits.

Saturday had only a small agenda: Folly Beach and shopping! I wanted to show mom one of my favorite spots in the world, a beach on the barrier islands off the coast with one way in and one way out. I've been to beaches all over the US, and even a half dozen in the Mediterranean, but there's something about Folly Beach that enchants me. We didn't stay long - it was July 4th weekend after all, and I believe everyone within a 1200 mile radius was in Folly that day :).

So we had a little walk, I showed her around, and we had lunch at the Lost Dog Cafe - a MUST visit if you're down there. (I think the last time the dude and I were in Folly for a long weekend, we went there 3 times!:) Excellent brunch and stellar sandwiches. Oh, and there are dogs everywhere! Well, pictures of them, that is. It is dog friendly though, so bring your pooch and sit on the patio if you've got one.

After a quick trip to the slow-paced life, we were recharged and ready to hit the outlet mall. I'm usually so unenthused with outlet malls lately, but Charleston's was actually pretty good! We shopped 'til we dropped, which was a lovely way for mom & daughter to catch up. She got her new Coach and I got new workout gear! Dinner was at Mellow Mushroom downtown on King. There's nothing like a good pizza to replenish body and soul!

Sunday, after another amazing home cooked breakfast at King George IV, we set off to check off another lighthouse on my mom's list. She is a lighthouse fanatic, but has yet to see any Carolina lights in person. The one on Sullivan's Island is pretty unique looking (at least to me), and bound to be far less crowded than Morris Island. As much as I love Folly, driving around on Sullivan's Island made me think "ok, maybe THIS is my favorite beach now!" - it was far sleepier than Folly, which always makes for a relaxing time. When I go to the beach, I'm not going to live it up and party down - I'm going to escape! So, let's have a look at this fantastic lighthouse!

Sullivan's Island light - it's a triangle! It's so accessible, you almost miss it. It is surrounded by a fence though, so I'm not sure what it takes to go inside. But, we were happy just to marvel at it from below. And of course, about 2 football fields past it, is the beach! I guess I'm a pretty terrible tour guide for Charleston, because I know nothing about this lighthouse. Something military related?? I could look it up and spout off some facts, but we all know Google :). Here's a fact for ya - it's awesome!

After that, home sweet home :).

Remembering Sara :(

I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but I wanted to share an experience I had over the weekend. The adorable creature pictured here is an infant squirrel. The dude found her Friday evening while picking up some branches in the backyard. Actually, he heard her before he saw her. She squeaked like a tiny chew toy! Being the kind and gentle animal lover that he is, he scooped her up and brought her inside to tell me. Unsure of what to do, we turned to trusty Google. We kept her warm and away from our curious pets. I found an organization in the Upstate that took care of injured and orphaned wildlife, Wildlife Rehab of Greenville.

We called the first name on the list in our area, and connected with Wendy, a wonderful lady who talked us through what to do. First, keep her warm with a heating pad or hot water bottle. Check. Don't try to feed her or give her water. Check. Then, bring her to me. So we made our way, the dude cradling a small box with a hot water bottle, a t-shirt and leaves. Wendy was a delight. All of the rehabilitators are volunteers, and I'm so thankful they're around! She welcomed us into her home past 9:30 on a Friday night and even offered us ice cream ;).

She determined our squirrel friend to be only a few days old. As you can see in the picture her eyes weren't even opened yet! She had a couple of scratches on her face, and some bruising on her abdomen and face, most likely from the fall out of her nest. She had spunk though, and was very wiggly and vocal - we thought she had a great chance of making it. Wendy gave her pain medication to ease her suffering, and would take care of her through the night. She asked if we had named her, and I said no, because I didn't want to get attached. Well, on the way home, we named her Sara. Sara the squirrel :). We were still pretty distraught, wishing we could do more. But I know that we did the best thing for Sara - putting her in the care of an expert who would know what to do. Wendy gave Sara a 50/50 chance of making it, but the dude and I thought she had more.

Unfortunately, I checked up on Sara yesterday to find that she didn't make it through the night :(::::::::. We were pretty sad, and a little shocked. But, at least she didn't suffer, and at least we gave her a warm bed to snuggle in for the night. Wendy advised that there may be a couple more babies if Sara fell, but so far we haven't seen any. I highly recommend WRofG's services though - we have so much wildlife around here: bunnies, squirrels, chipmunks, opossums, birds, weasels, groundhogs, etc, etc, etc! - anyone could come upon an orphaned or injured animal. If you ever do, give WRofG a call - it's nice to know that there are people out there who care about God's creatures like we do. And yes, perhaps it's a bit silly to mourn the loss of an animal we only knew for a few hours, but, if you know me well enough, you'll know I put animals above people any day!

Ever since Friday, I've had Hall & Oates' "Sara Smile" in my head :).

Last Minute Reminder

Although, since this would be the first time I've said it (for shame, for shame), it can hardly be a reminder, can it? Either way, don't say I didn't warn ya - Project Runway Season 9 premieres tonight!

Unfortunately I'll be missing it. But fortunately, it's to go see these guys!

I won tickets last week! (and may or may not have wanted to show off my awesome mani...) I'm a huge fan of Derek Trucks. I'm a huge fan of Susan Tedeschi. Now the husband & wife musicians have joined forces to form one awesome, bluesy powerhouse of a band. Sorry Heidi, but I'll catch you on reruns. :D

Since I'm kinda blue today, I thought I'd revisit my most recent sublime memory - my July 4th weekend in Charleston. However, as you can see from Sadie's pout, she was none too happy that mommy was away. Yup, it was just the girls - my mom and me had the whole city to ourselves. (Why yes, I *did* make her dog mattress and dog pillows! The dude made her bed out of discarded shelving when we got our custom closets in. We were going to paint it, but I kind of like it au naturel looking. Not bad for a pooch, eh?) Pardon the quality of my pics - my old trusty phone is to blame :).

On recommendation from a friend, we hit Jestine's Kitchen for our first long-awaited meal. You know that awful state when you're not hungry enough to eat before you leave, and then you're on the road and it hits you? But you don't want to waste your meal on some awful drive-thru food, so you hold out, knowing good eats await at your destination? Jestine's was our destination! There's a great history here, AND a great menu. (Coca-Cola cake anyone?) Apparently it's a local institution that we hit at just the right time - when we walked past it on our way home that evening, the line was around the building. The photo is of an antique looking fire station directly across the street. We happened to be walking in when the sirens wailed, sending a not-so-antique looking fire engine roaring out of its bowels. In short, LOUD!

Ahhhhh the deep blue sea. Here's a view of the Cooper River Bridge from The Battery. It's a beautiful park filled with cannons, swinging benches and lots of shady paths. You can walk along the water forever, with beautiful pastel historic houses (Rainbow Row) leading the way. While walking along the seawall, we even saw a man catch a shark! Ok, so it was no bigger than my foot, but still! A shark! Thankfully he let it go :).

The Battery is also home to this guy, the Pineapple Fountain! Ever since I learned on a trip to DC about the pineapple being a symbol for hospitality, I've always wanted one on my home. Specifically, a pineapple door knocker. No bangin' fruit yet, but it's on my radar. We stayed in the same B&B (King George IV Inn) I stayed in for Fashion Week, and it was as charming as I remembered. The location is perfect - everything you could want to see is within walking distance.

You can see the seawall on the right (which I'm standing on to take this pic), and those are some of the unmistakable historic Charleston houses on the left. I don't want to think about the price of those ocean view homes...

That night we had dinner at Boone's Restaurant on King. We maaay have been swayed by the dog logo :). We split some appetizers, and I couldn't get enough of the Philly Cheesesteak Spring Rolls w/ Spicy Ketchup! It's definitely one of the best food marriages I've ever witnessed. Mom also had her first Firefly drink, which is fitting since it's made in Charleston. It was a Firefly Mojito, and I know it was delicious because of course I stole some sips! The place had a pretty decent beer selection too - this Agave Wheat was one I hadn't tried.

But with all that traveling and walking we did, us Southern girls were beat after dinner - no table dancing for us. It was lovely to be able to walk back to our room and take a breather on the 2nd story porch for a while, just people watching and chatting before heading to bed. I recommend a good porch sitting session to anyone during their vacation! Another day in pictures comin' up...

Proverbs Abound

Well, I actually started putting my money where my mouth is this weekend. (Which is a funny expression when you think about it...people walking round with bills stuffed in their mouths because they've DONE something!)

Yes, I ran my big butt off, coupled with a killer Pilates session, so I'm still on that journey, but this involves no huffing and puffing whatsoever. Just before I laid down in bed this past Saturday night (it was 10:30 PM, and as I believe that beforehand I was finishing Tina Fey's Bossypants. But for the sake of embellishment, let's all pretend that I was out partying HARDCORE. Because when you are a social beast like me, out all night tearing the town up with your books, staying out until the ungodly hour of 10:30 PM is what you do.) So, I'm in bed, and as I hit the lights something hit ME. An article idea!

Wow - you are as underwhelmed as I'd hoped! Well, if you'll remember my previous soliloquy, I mentioned I was at a bit of a writer's....WALL. So as this idea struck me, I knew I had to get it down or it would be gone forever. I called out for the dude and he dutifully brought me my iPad in bed, thus proving that I am just as lazy and codependent on technology as you thought I was! I hashed out the main points and worked on it a bit more diligently Sunday. Not to overstate this episode's importance, but I did want to pat myself on the back for taking a first step in accomplishing my goals. You, too can be an awesome person, with lots of practice sleeping, yelling at your spouse and refusing to settle for anything that involves moving from your location. Get out there folks - I believe in you!

Boca Raton, FL recently held its 7th annual Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest, and Susan Brennan (left), was the winner! Susan used feathers, hot glue, packing tape and 4 rolls of toilet paper for her creation, garnering her the $1000 prize. I'm sure there's far more than $1000 worth of work there, but...it's an honor just to be nominated! Right? Second prize got $500 and 3rd got $250, and I am amaaaazed at the 3rd place winner's dress. How she didn't win has got to be breaking some law of the universe. I mean look! Anyway, what do you think of the gown? I daresay that most of you wouldn't even have known it was made out of TP had I not told you. Well done, gals! May your marriages be overflowing with joy! And not your toilets.

Saks for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

If you couldn't surmise from this extreeemely well-done graphic, Saks Fifth Avenue is opening a store in Kazakstan! The luxury department store is slated to open an outpost in Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city, in August of 2012. So, we can't keep a Saks in Charleston, fashion capital of the Southeast, but THEY get one!? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for branching out to other countries, but I don't think I'm alone when I say that I didn't think there was much of a market for Prada and Marc Jacobs there. Although, since much (ok, ALL) of my knowledge of glorious Kazakhstan comes from Borat, forgive me if I thought they still had mule-pulled carts and used Ziplocs as toilets. :) Apparently, the store will be one of several in a luxury mall in Almaty, complete with a health club and Marriott hotel. Stay classy, Kazakhstan.

Freakin' Funny Fashion of the Week: Working the Ratwalk

New York City (of course!) recently hosted its first Fancy Rat Convention, where rat lovers, friends and curious came out to show their rodent love. Pet fashion designer (yes, I know - I had a hard time saying it too!) Ada Nieves was on hand showcasing her rat fashions, including tuxedos, gowns and more, bedazzled to the hilt for around $80 a pop. She calls it her Ratoure Collection, which really makes me want to punch someone.

Please, people. Rats get enough of a bad wrap as it is - can we at least leave them some dignity?

Warrior Mode

My dear Valerie, obviously missing me in this photo.

Let's get real, kittens. (One of my favorite bloggers, Sal, always refers to her readers as that, and darn if I haven't picked it up myself!) It's not that there hasn't been tons of fashion (and other) news going on, I've just been experiencing a block of sorts. I've been writing more of a book I'd like to eventually publish (shooting for 80 years old at this point), but as for the instantly gratifying juicy pop culture wisdom I love to dole out, I've been quite stubborn. And then, I could always pepper in more about my life, but who wants to hear that?
But, looks like that's exactly what I'm doing! I find it helpful (if not burdensome for you, heh), when taking stock of things, to let others know - there's accountability in numbers. Here are some things I've been dealing with lately, that maybe someone else out there can relate to:

Self Image. Countless times before, I've reached the "enough is enough" point with my weight and lack of activity, but this time (in the words of a true repeat offender), it's different! I actually have been kicking my own ass with running, biking, Pilates and kettle bells, almost obsessively. And of course, more healthy food made at home. I still have a burger from Mojo's now and then, because I know if I completely punish myself with "only salad," I will never be able to sustain that. But, planning dinner for the week instead of waiting until 8:00 PM each night to decide, has helped a lot. Tuesday evening would come around, and, stumped (and too tired to bother) with dinner decisions, we'd opt for Tito's or Jack in the Box, spending too much money and too many calories. It's amazing the difference a couple more quick trips to the store during the week can make. And, no visible changes to my appearance yet, but I definitely feel stronger and better in general. I keep telling myself "in a couple of weeks, it will start to melt off!" Here's hoping.

Self Confidence. As talented as I (sometimes) think I am, and as talented as other people tell me I am, I have never fully acted on those talents in a big way. To be frank, I really want to have my work appear in more magazines, but I'm just too shy/scared/unsure to try. I've been rejected before, so I don't think that's the main factor. I just can't seem to get over this hump of uncertainty, telling me I won't be good enough, they'll laugh at me, and they'll think I was dumb. It's quite a crippling thing, this self-doubt, and I'm trying to push through by just writing, writing, writing. Unfortunately, sometimes this self-doubt creeps into even the easy things, like the blog. It should be a fun and no-pressure outlet for me, but sometimes, it too becomes an arena of "I won't be good enough, they'll laugh at me, and they'll think I was dumb." I'm trying though, and this is a first step, no?

I suppose there are a few other factors contributing to this slump (like my non-stop erupting face! my non-cooperative hair!), but those are the 2 biggies. I never want to put Debbie Downer stuff on here, because people just don't like to read that - they want to be taken away, and revel in the silly when they're reading blogs like mine. But, I'm hoping that by posting this for all the world (or the few that read this) to see, I'll be helping myself, and maybe someone else.

I coined the Warrior Mode title because A) ever since I watched Game of Thrones, I've been hooked on ancient warrior movies. I've watched like 3 in as many days, my favorite lately being a Swedish film, Arn: The Knight Templar! and B) I'd like to keep this warrior theme going for myself - fighting doubt and fat, one battle at a time!

Fashion Buffet: Mixed Bag Edition

Or as it should really be called, I'm too lazy to find a theme :). I pity those of you not fortunate enough to be off today like me, but not TOO much, because you get a Fashion Buffet today!

I've been working a lot this week - at the office, sprucing up the house and on the pavement. I swear I've got a Popeye arm from all the painting I've done...and my hips are perpetually sore from all the running I've been doing. But alas, I can't get fit without a little agony. I'm off to Charleston in a few (can't wait to revisit my beloved Folly Beach and pop in to my friends at Cynthia Rowley and Hampden Clothing!) I'll be staying in the same adorable B&B off King Street, right in the thick of the action. But enough about me - let's eat, shall we?

Blue Runway:

In the latest Harper's Bazaar (which I still haven't even read yet - oops!), they've included an editorial with the newest breakout star of the summer, Smurfette. Here she is dressed in Lanvin (my fave of the outfits), and they've also outfitted her in Marc Jacobs, Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton. It's cute, of course, and Bazaar has always been a little cheeky at times, so it's not completely off their radar to do this. (They dressed Marge Simpson in Chanel a couple of years ago.) But, I'm a little on the fence. One side of me is perpetually rolling its eyes, but the other is like "well, ok - that's different, bravo." What do you think? Also, isn't Katy Perry set to play Smurfette? Should she be the one in this editorial? Weigh in, kittens!

Camel Repellent:

So we all know I'm a sucker for a wacky beauty product, but this one might make you blush, hence me slipping it in the middle so as not to make it linger in your psyche as the last thing you've seen today ;). This product, Cuchini (shudder), is a special panty insert to prevent the unsightly camel toe. For those of you scratching your heads as to what camel toe is, read about the phenomenon here, or in layman's terms, here. So, I know this word is thrown around a lot, and mostly because people just like to get a laugh, in my opinion. But I had no idea this was such a serious issue, until I saw this. It also seems a bit counter intuitive to me. If you are getting camel toe because of your garments down under, won't adding ANOTHER piece of fabric only accentuate the situation? Just sayin'.

Eyes Only For You:

Ahhh! See what Miss Germanotta did there? Instead of scaring us with her prime rib panties and condom leggings, she's subtly (well, ok, somewhat - she is missing a shirt...) expressed herself with the wonder of makeup. And eyelids that look like eyes! And Betty Boop eyes at that! Clevah. I wish we'd see more cheeky Gaga like this than the "how can she possibly top herself" antics we've seen of late. Do I still think she's awesome either way? Well, yeah.
PS - I kind of want that vest...

Keep Your Head on Straight:

The Royal Ascot took place outside merry London recently, which is a horserace-cum-social showcase of people with some sort of importance in the UK. I'm not interested in horse racing in the slightest, but of course, if it's a UK event, the fabulous hats will be making their appearance - and you know I love that. Check out this gal, showing her iPad love with an Apple-inspired headpiece. Love! There were lots of hats with birds too, even on dudes! Some ridiculous, and some down right cool. Check out the full slideshow here. I've been an avid hat wearer for years, and I'm glad the rest of the country seems to be catching on to their appeal. As for this kind of hat though, I think I'll leave that to the Brits. But you never know, I am really British...

Among some light painting, basketball bouncing and hardware installing, looking back, it seems like the meat of our weekend was spent watching Game of Thrones. The wildly popular HBO hit has just ended its first season, and thanks to a free HBO weekend from U-verse, we are caught up like the rest of the country! We watched the entire first season, 9 episodes, in 2 days. Clearly, we have priorities. It is pretty addictive though, and now, instead of rolling my eyes when people bring it up, I can join in the discussion, ha ha. If you’re unfamiliar, here are some things you need to know:

1) It’s medieval, and therefore, fantastic.

2) The dude said it’s based on this fantasy book, A Song of Ice and Fire. Wait, so I’m like a full-fledged nerd now!?

3) There’s (a low concentration of, thus far) zombies. The script may call them White Walkers, but trust me, they are zombies.

4) There’s lots of names to keep up with, and nicknames on top of that. And not names like Joe & Anne, either. Names like Eddard (Ned), Samwell, Tyrion and Sansa. If they’re talking about a person but he doesn’t appear in the scene, sometimes I just pretend I’m following.

5) There’s lots of pretty fair-maiden hair and flowy gowns to ogle.

6) As for the dudes to ogle, well, they’re all mostly large, old, and/or bushy bearded. Either that or they look like women. And 90% have long greasy hair.

7) There’s puppies! One of them, the runt dire wolf Ghost, looks just like my Sadie!

8) There's lots of sex. Sorry – it is HBO.

9) There’s much talk of “winter coming.” It can be puzzling, because one of the main settings is perpetually covered in snow all the time. “Isn’t winter already here?” The dude explained that it’s not winter in the conventional sense, as in, there are 3 months of cold and then it starts warming up. It’s like, an ominous, dark time sweeps over the land, bringing with it evil (and zombies!) that can last for years. It’s like a being.

10) The character development is awesome. You really feel such intense emotions toward some of the characters – it speaks so well to the acting abilities of the cast. I hate the boy king, Joffrey, and his pointy little face. I’m annoyed by his queen-to-be, Sansa, but can understand where she’s coming from. Sean Bean’s portrayal of Eddard is fantastic, as is his wife, Catelyn. I used to hate the Khaleesi, but now I think she’s awesome. I love Arya, the youngest Stark girl, because she’s feisty like me :). My favorite character though, is Tyrion Lannister, pictured left. Everything he says is hilarious! I loved his character on Nip/Tuck too, so I’m glad he’s getting some love with this show. He’s smart, sarcastic, but tender deep down.

I Have Been...

I'm sure some of you are wondering where the heck I've been! I wish I had some grand story like "Oh, I had to cover YSL's Resort 2012 collection on a yacht in the Maldives - I've been swamped!" but truthfully I've been doing nothing of the sort. Ho hummmm. I have had a few new projects pop up, and most of the last 2 weeks I've spent crafting and sewing and living at Hobby Lobby. But still, no excuse for the hiatus!

I was preparing to enter the 2011 Indie Craft Parade, sewing and cutting and clamping until my fingers were numb. The deadline for entries was yesterday, and I decided about Friday that it just wasn't in the cards for me this year. I'm very competitive with myself, and a perfectionist, and I just didn't feel like the product I was creating was my best. I wouldn't have been proud to show it off, and really feel like I need more practice sewing the tougher projects I've jumped head first into. I was a little bummed, but, that just means I will have that much better of a showing next year. I think I made the right decision, and I'm hoping if nothing else it will be the catalyst to open that 'ol Etsy shop I keep putting on the back burner... Hopefully I can show you some of my goods on F4TC soon too!

Speaking of yesterday, did everybody call their daddy!? :)

Shatter Bandwagon

Well, we just had the OPI Shatter giveaway of their newest Silver Shatter shade. (say that 3 times fast...) Before, OPI just had the Black Shatter, which caused such a stir in the mani world, I didn't see how they could top it. Then they dropped Silver, and then I saw an ad in a magazine for a whole shatter line!

There's royal blue, navy, turquoise, black, white and red. I don't know what it is about this crackling nail polish that gets me (and millions of other lasses) excited, but it does! Maybe it's because while most of us have that tiny urge to be wild inside, most of us can't really let it out for fear of various societal retributions. These polishes do their best to quell that desire, without making you look ridiculous in every day life. Wow, didn't think I could make nail polish all philosophical now didya? I haven't seen these in stores yet, and shockingly, OPI doesn't have any info on their website. (I just have to wonder where all these gals get their swatch colors!? And usually, if you see an ad for it, it's already been out for weeks, but OPI does that kind of backwards - they make you see it and lust after it long before you can actually get it. Pff.)
If you remember in my last nail haul post when I bought Silver Shatter, I also picked up a turquoise crackle from China Glaze, but I've yet to use it yet. Methinks it would look smashing (no pun intended...ok, intended) over a milky silver!

And as if that weren't enough, now Sally Hansen has a line of shattering top coats, called Crackle Overcoat. (Makes me think of some kind of crinkly trench coat.) I mentioned this to the dude and his response was "Who's Sally Hansen?" Yeah, because that's what I wanted you to take away from this... Anyway, I'm super excited about these! Purple! Pink! Gold! I've seen lots of real-life swatches on blogs, and I must say they look awesome. Unlike OPI, too, you can get Sally Hansen just about anywhere. They should be out now, so send in your pics if you try it!

High Heel Race for Charity!

How fun, right? Oh and did I mention that it's for MEN!?! If you're not a man who runs in high heels, or don't know any men who jog in heels, you should toooootally come out anyway just to see dudes try to to do it!

The "Run A Mile In Her Shoes" men's high heel race will be next Sunday, June 12 at 9:00 am sharp downtown near Rick Erwin's. It's the first (and hopefully annual) race like this in here, and proceeds benefit the American Diabetes Association of Greenville. Tickets are $16.82, with $15 going directly to the ADA! My friends from Ecy~Shoes n' Chic are presenting the race, and of course, have all the shoes a man could want to run the race in!Prizes (yes! prizes!) include gift certificates to Barley's, The Trappe Door, Wild Wing Cafe, game tickets to see the Greenville Drive, and a Golden Heel trophy - sure to be the envy of all your friends!After the race, Soby's will serve brunch to all the runners, annnnd, give a portion of all brunch sales from everyone else to the ADA as well. Not bad for a Sunday morning, eh? I can't believe I neglected to gift you all with the best part of the 2011 Met Gala - the fugly frocks!

Dressed in the Dark:

Ladies, please! Ok MK, you CANNOT tell me you saw this dress and didn't think "Elf Couture" - at least nix the green trim! So, so bad.
Demi thought she'd wear the headpiece she would have worn to the royal wedding, were she and Mr. Demi invited. Perhaps we should congratulate her for helping the oiled-coated birds affected by the Gulf oil spill by plucking their feathers and putting them on her dress. And Jessica, honey, "Honey," yes, you may be pregnant, but that doesn't mean you have to wear gilded tissue paper. That shapeless thing is doing you no favors. Venus, speaking of not getting invited to the royal wedding....methinks she's projecting her mega crush on Prince William with that wedding gown. Alexa, I adore you, but this dress is not only seriously ugly, it's far too twee for you. It looks like something a Bratz doll would wear. Just sayin'.
Dear GOD:

Joy: You are FAR too gorgeous to be covering up your body in that pastel afghan. And this is the Met Ball - I'm sure the invite didn't call for "sweaters and knits." Just sayin'. Julianne: The print, the fabric and the car wash fringe is TOO MUCH. It looks like your dress was dipped in gasoline before going through the paper shredder. Christina: if a mud pie were a dress...
ALT: The king of "dreckitude" is himself a picture of all that is blue, hot, and a mess. There is no excuse for this James Brown choir robe that is threatening to swallow him and the entire red carpet alive.
Why So Serious?:

These women are wearing possibly the most ridiculous looks of the night, yet play the part of a serious poser quite well. Kate should not have chosen that color, that fabric or that silhouette for her pregnant body. It's like a beacon of light on that belly, and not in the lovely pregnant glow kind of way. Plus that mermaid hair is so, so tired. Miranda: I actually thought this had to be a joke. It really looks like something Lisa Turtle would have worn for the Saved By The Bell wedding. Carolyn: Yay! Tom Ford's designing for gals again! However, this dress...wow, ok. Um, if you went to a Halloween store in a senior citizens' community, this would be the "sexy" witch. Karolina: I'm not sure if this is even a dress. Are those genie pants? And Stella, clearly the star of the evening (even though it was for McQueen...), of course showed up in her own creation. Someone please give me something positive about this dress, because I can't for the life of me find anything. How can one garment manage to be too trendy, frumpy, dated, shapeless yet reminiscent of an umbrella all at the same time? This dress just makes me angry.

Yes - I finally scored a bottle OPI's of Silver Shatter! This post is about a week late - I wanted to give it away last week but I was sick :( and then this thing called life got in the way... I was at Ulta (again) on May 8 when they opened (again) to throw fists and fight off the other nail lovers to get my bottle. And of course, it was so anti-climactic I could have yawned and gotten a bigger reaction. "Oh...here they are. Like 20 of them." Nevertheless, I got it! I also got...

Pretty little maids, all in a row. Check out China Glaze's turquoise crackle, Crushed Candy on the left!!! I know - these nail polishes are blowing my mind! The bright orange color is actually more like a hot pinky coral (I think it's Orly's Cotton Candy), and here's what it looks like with the Silver Shatter.

So anyway anyway, I've checked back at Ulta and ALL of the shatter polishes are gone. You can scout eBay and pay about $20 for a bottle, or, you can win one (no, not the one I used, but a NEW one) from me!

For a glimpse into my own beauty TRAGEDY, know that I am still without the coveted OPI Silver Shatter. I read that May 1 was the release date (well, I also read "April" and "in May," which is REALLY helpful), and so I was at Ulta when the doors opened to snatch up my bottle. Even better, they were having a Buy 2, Get 1 Free sale on their OPI polishes, so I was going to snag a bottle of "Houston, We Have A Purple" from the Texas collection (holllaaaaa!). Well just my luck, they didn't have it yet! All that pilgrimage for nothing! I shall try again this weekend, as my nails are naked in protest...

Violent Lips:

It seems we've stumbled back into a phase where temporary is all the rage in the beauty industry. There's Beyonce's temporary tattoos, stick-on nail polish strips, and even temporary tooth gems for you to trick out your smile. Enter Violent Lips, a company who's cornering the market on temporary "lip tattoos." Why, just the product you've been waiting for, right? You were sitting there wishing someone would invent a product to render your lips striped and sparkled, lest you look ridiculous at your next PTA meeting. They actually look really cool IN THEORY, but I can't see these taking off. They've got everything from fishnet prints to leopard, which kind of just make you look like you've got leftover nachos on your mouth. But take a look for yourself at the full line, and hurry, because they're offering Buy 3, Get 1 Free right now! AHHHH!!

Katy's Perry-tale:

Pop star Katy Perry must be REALLY into the royals, or actually, just William. Here's a pic she posted on Twitter of her Will & Kate-inspired manicure, although really, The Duke is the star of the show. Clearly, Katy is in touch with her inner child, and I can't fault her for that. If you can't have fun with your nails, what's next - no more lip gloss!?! Here, here for self expression! As for the cuticle caricatures though, I'm not sure if I find this more creepy or hilarious - what say you?

You Smell Like A Pig:

It was bound to happen soon, I just didn't think it would be tied to a country so drenched in perfume snobbery. Bacon, still riding its tidal wave of popularity these days, is the star of everything from Band-Aids to chewing gum to coffee. In fact I had a bacon brownie recently, and it was pretty much heaven on a plate. Now, there's bacon-scented perfume. Fargginay has released these scents based on an old Parisian butcher's penchant for gifting his customers with essential oils containing the essence of bacon. I love this answer in their FAQ's: ...bacōn Classic is best characterized as a spicy maple aroma and bacōn Gold, a memorable sizzling citrus. Boy, they're really riding that breakfast analogy train aren't they! I must say I am impressed with the logo, though. Here's an interesting way to package your makeup product - in bullet-inspired pens. Dutch makeup artist Ellis Faas sells all of her makeup products in sleek pens, so everything from your blush to your eye makeup all comes from easily transportable and easily maneuverable pens. An even cooler aspect of the brand, is that Faas, feeling guilty for throwing all of her used pens away, came up with a plan to give back to the environment as well as needy children. Her Make Up Not War campaign invites customers to return their empty makeup pens. Artists, designers and photographers will then create a piece of art from the pens to be auctioned off for the charity War Child. War Child benefits children in war torn areas with stable environments, creative outlets and education. Wow, so, another week…another tight denim wannabe product threatening to strangle the life out of our nether regions. The funny thing is that these are made by Hue, the colored tights super brand. So really, that should tell you right there that anything with a control top should not see the light of day from the knees up. “But they have REAL pockets!” you protest. So do the folders you used in school, but you wouldn’t put a pair of keys in those either. Unless maybe you’re a professional cyclist with a penchant for casual attire, don’t even think about these!

I love the name, JorJeggings, that Racked has come up with. Some others in contention: biker jorts, shorggings, jorggings, sheggorgs, lorggings…boy that was fun. Anyone else?

Not your standard issue LBD here. These ladies took a very boring color and made it exciting. Well done! (Told ya Stella was the designer of the night!)

I Think I Love You But I Might Hate You:

Beyonce (who got booed for not posing long enough!), while fabulous, looks quite restricted in her fishtail gown. I think it's the cutout and/or the turtleneck that's ruining it for me. What say you?
Iman: The goddess who can do no wrong has, well, done a little wrong. Of course she has the chutzpah and body to pull a sequined full length jump suit, but it's not the most flattering. ON IMAN. And that's saying a LOT.
Hailee: A mullet dress in the truest sense of the word here. I think all her sartorial problems would be solved if that "party in the back" were lopped off. It'd be much more age appropriate too, dontcha think?
Ginnifer: The color is gorgeous (well of course :), and in general she looks very fierce here. And while I want to love the sexy twists, they just add bulk to her tiny frame. Almost there...
Close But No Cigar:

Oh, Solange. Always in your sister's shadow. On the whole, it's a very cool look. And I know you have adopted a quirkier style of late to separate yourself from Beyonce. And I'm all for that. And when one does that, Dries is a great choice to do it in. But this dress is borderline cray-cray. I think I'm all for the crazy bodice, but that bottom print KILLS it for me. It's so...Hamrick's.
Wawa: While it's nice to see Babs in some color!!!, that might be a BIT much color for everyone's retinas. Good on you for stepping out there though.
Kirsten: On the one hand, this is kitschy cool. On the other, Debbie Gibson AND her grandma want their clothes back.
Frida: LOSE. THE. TIE. It takes an otherwise elegant gown into costume/gimmick world. Boo.
Naomi: Why the hate, you're asking? Because at first glance, I saw this and swooned like you did. But upon further inspection, you'll see that the entire top half of Naomi's body is encased in nude netting. If it were just a strapless dress, GORGE. But with the tulle overlay (even the long sleeves!), all I can wonder is when did she cross over into ice skating?

Boy, it really slipped up on me this year. Another red carpet parade where celebrities get patted on the back for being pretty, yes, but I like this stampede more than the others because you get to see people in the fashion industry who don't normally grace red carpets. This year the Met honored Alexander McQueen, whose line has had quite the fanfare of late due to gracing Kate Middleton at the royal wedding. I was shocked - only a handful of folks showed up rocking McQueen.

Summary:
Top color of the night: Nude. Top designer of the night: Stella McCartney - there must have been dozens of frocks bearing her label! Fug factor: Very high. Fab factor: Also very high. See for yourself below in the roundup!

Utterly Fabulous:

I can't believe I'm saying this, but J. Lo looks awesome! Diane looks so freakin cool, but glam at the same time. I'm mad at her though, because WHERE IS PACEY!?! Liv knocked it out of the park, and looks absolutely stunning in this pic. I mean, the hair, the subtle silhouette with intricate details, the gradient color - love. ERW went back to blonde, and girlfriend is workin that dress, no? So flattering and full of detail, yet not fussy. BAR! That dress is smokin. And everything else is simple, so you nailed the look. And ok - I know you'll think I'm cuckoo for including Ms. Guinness, but she totally exemplified everything that was McQueen - elegant, statement-making, gasp-inducing painfully beautiful drama. If you're gonna pay tribute, do it like this!

MJB looks so happy there - love it! Her silhouette is simple but the intricate bodice makes it stand out. Love her in white! Isabel, even with that dead-eyed pose, looks so, so cool. The knife pleated fabric keeps it from being boring, and the breezy silhouette is so flattering. And love the color! I also love her overt use of 70s accessories ;). Love the tea length on Ms. Bela. Gorgeous color, gorgeous detailing, and the simple hair balances it all. Gwenyth, in the color and designer of the night, looks like a goddess. Nuff said. Ashley looks ever-so-pretty, and thank goodness for the metal detailing, because she would probably get lost in that color. Mrs. Jack White is a vision in gold with a curve-hugging bodice balanced by flowy sleeves and skirt. Proof that redheads can wear gold! :)

You'll-Roll-Your-Eyes-But-I-Am-In-Love:

Eva looks splendidly 70s, and that cobalt blue is gorgeous. I adore Michelle's quirky style, and those gold sparrows are no exception! Another great McQueen display by the inimitable AdR - she can do no wrong! My fave Dutch design duo V&R look positively adorable, no? They can get away with printed tuxes - they're European! They're designers! Love how Lily makes this positively scandalous lace dress look almost demure with a Peter Pan collar and elbow length sleeves. And what a fun alternative to black lace!

Movie Review: The Other Guys

It's been quite a while since I've done one, innit?

My hiatus hasn't been for lack of watching movies though - BELIEVE me. This past month especially it seems like I’ve run through quite the barrage of flicks. The one freshest on my mind is The Other Guys, an Adam McKay film starring Will Ferrell and ~~Marky Mark~~ Mark Wahlberg. Adam McKay is like Will Ferrell’s right hand man. He and Will have done Anchorman, Talladega Nights and started the hilarious FunnyOrDie.com. So yeah, he’s a funny guy.

Anyway, the movie didn’t seem to do too well, and in fact I don’t even really remember seeing ads for it. But I figured if it had the Ferrell/McKay team behind it, it shouldn’t be missed. Other notable actors in the film include Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Eva Mendes, Steve Coogan, Michael Keaton (yes! Batman!) and Rob Riggle. And yes, I did that from memory – I told you I had a freaky name memory. (Or if I didn’t, I’m telling you now.)

Synopsis: Samuel L. and The Rock are 2 hot shot NYC cops who always seem to get the best cases, all the fame, the hottest chicks and are cocky as all get out. The movie starts out with bad ass explosions and chase scenes - nice! Will Ferrell plays a police accountant, Allen, who is also kind of a cop? The reason he has a gun and sits in the bullpen with the other cops was still not clear, but does it have to be? Well I guess not. His character is very straight-laced and by the book, never having fired his gun of course. Wahlberg’s character, Terry, is known city-wide as “the cop that shot Derek Jeter,” and my boy Jeter makes a great cameo. “He’s a bi-racial angel!” Terry gets the last pick of cases and is the brunt of all the jokes around the force (along with Allen) because of his famous faux pas.

Well, the 2 hot shot cops can’t live forever being so reckless, and the way that they die is, well, hilarious. It’s sick, but it’s hilarious, because they were that stupid. So of course Terry & Allen are forced to step up and fill the void left by such a tragic loss to the city’s crime force. They run into many roadblocks, like no one giving them a chance to take a call, or hobos having orgies in their car, or getting beat up by the guys they’re after. Allen is reluctant to hit the streets, while Terry is itching to get back out there. Oh yeah, and Terry can’t stand Allen. He tells him his farts aren’t manly. “They sound like a baby blowing out birthday candles.” !!!!

Remember, you gotta creep. Creep.

The movie is predictable but aren’t all stupid comedies? I’m not watching this movie to be surprised or moved by dramatic plot twists. I’m watching to laugh. And that I did. I was surprised how much I laughed, in fact. Ferrell is gold as usual. He does deadpan with the best of them, and even threw in a little of his character from SNL's "Family Dinner" skits. Eva Mendes is supremely charming, and Rob Riggle steals all the scenes he's in. Surprise hit: Michael Keaton! He is hilarious in this flick. His part-time job at Bed, Bath & Beyond and his accidental TLC references (the R&B group, not the network) will have you rolling.

The true test of any good comedy is the ability of its one-liners to rattle around in your head long after it's over. This movie does that, and I can totally see it being one I watch many times over. Again, surprise there. I thought it would be one that got a few smiles out of me and I'd never think of again. But I have giggled several times today just remembering the scene where Will Ferrell sings Irish drinking songs in a pub, waxing poetic about pink eye and Harry Potter, or how Allen's red Prius makes Terry feel like he's riding around in a "tampon on wheels." Seriously, if you're into laughing, I highly recommend.

Fashion Buffet: Creepy Edition

Why no, this isn't creepy at all!

So Mr. Chanel is teamed up with Magnum*, and has created an entire life-sized Paris hotel room out of chocolate, complete with his male muse, Baptiste Giabiconi. Yes, the dude is made out of chocolate, right down to his white chocolate tighty whities. The headboard? Chocolate. The walls? Chocolate. Even the chair - chocolate. Oh, and if you look close, you can see Baptiste is holding a Magnum ice cream bar, the actual thing being...advertised? I'm not sure why on earth Kaiser Karl would use 10.5 tons (yes, TONS) of chocolate to get his love of Magnum across, but there it is in all its cacao glory.

*If you're like me (and most Americans), when you hear the word "Magnum" you either think 1 of 2 things: Zoolander's much anticipated comeback pose, or um...well, an extra large prophylactic device. Ok. A condom! Actually a Magnum in this case is an ice cream bar. I had some friends over recently, one of them being British. She dropped the Magnum in conversation, and of course the rest of us, mature 20 and 30 somethings that we are, erupted into laughter. You can imagine the guts that were busted when our pregnant friend longed for a Magnum to bite into. When all was cleared up, of course, "magnum" became the buzz word of the night, dropped into any and every innuendo imaginable. Just when I'd gotten the word out of my head, I see this doozy of a story about Karl creating a naked chocolate man just to sell Magnum. Thanks a lot!

Who are you looking at!?

Teen blogger Tavi Gevinson, aka Style Rookie (who yes, I read regularly!), posted these pics of an exhibition by Andrew Yang during Fashion's Night Out last fall. They are dolls (yikes! do not like!) dressed in exact replicas of top Fall 2010 runway fashions. He made the dolls, the clothes, everything. It's pretty amazing (I especially love the McQueen ones, here) and the fact that he made the dolls look just like the models who were wearing each particular look. Like the Givenchy look, left, complete with red eye makeup. Eek! A lot of people don't know this about me (ok, actually, most people probably do), but I am creeped out by dolls. Ventriloquist dummies (the worst!), marionettes, porcelain dolls...you know how people are freaked out by clowns? Well they're my clowns. Don't judge. Just laugh :).

Royal Pains:

It's no surprise I am a HUGE anglophile. I love anything and everything Bri-ish, from my curse words to my Union Jack-adorned Mini Cooper. Am I happy for Kate & William? Of course! (They're not the royal pains, it's everyone else!) Did I wake up at 4 am today to watch them get married? Hail no. Of course I'm interested, I'm a woman after all. But the media circus this has become is sad - I really feel bad for them. They can't have a personal, intimate wedding like 99% of the population does - every single detail from her makeup to his socks is scrutinized ad infinitum. Even if I wasn't interested at all, there's no way I could avoid seeing it - it will be EVERYWHERE for the next month. There's commemorative plates, stamps, and hell, even these super creepy masks! We've just had deadly tornadoes down south, Japan is still reeling from their disasters and for God's sake THE NFL MIGHT NOT HAPPEN IN 2011!!!!!! Surely we can give these 2 lovebirds a break from this insanity and focus on some real news.

Weekend Warrior

I had a dear friend from Texas visit me this weekend, and when she arrived, we hit the ground running. Thursday we hit downtown for a local band and rooftop dinner, which was plenty of excitement for us. Friday we went to the Biltmore house in Asheville, NC - a dream of hers and an oft taken for granted landmark of mine. The Festival of Flowers was underway too, and though the weather was a little dreary, it was still fantastic. We even saw 2 brides there too - I wonder if there were any catfights!

There was a greenhouse (more like a greenmansion) with a room just for orchids - check out these deep purple ones! And duuuude - this tulip is almost as big as my hand!

After coming home (about an hour drive - can't beat that), we rested and hit my favorite pizza spot, Tito's for some authentic NY style pies. Saturday included a stop at the farmers' market and the Northgate Soda Shop for a chocolate root beer float (her) and a peanut butter shake (me). And then a cookout in the backyard with homemade mint lemonade and s'mores!

Sunday, we just couldn't get enough of the sunshine so we took the cookout leftovers downtown to Falls Park for an Easter picnic - it was the stuff daydreams are made of.

Freakin Funny Fashion of the Week: Junderpants!

So, yeah, um....those are nice. Once you get past the retching, they're actually not that bad. As long as they stay hidden away from sight under your real jeans, dudes. Click the pic to learn more, although I can't imagine you'd want to.

I can't help but think of Dr. Tobias Fünke, David Cross' character from one my faaavorite shows, Arrested Development. If you haven't caught any of this gem's hilarity, get thee to a computer, NOW! Anyway, Tobias was a self-proclaimed "never-nude," meaning he was never, ever nude. He even wore his famous cut-off jean shorts while showering, and, as you can see here, while trying on a swimsuit. Bless.

Of course, neither are acceptable. Dig.

Blogging From Florida!*

*Well, kinda. At least that's when I started writing this post. Outside next to the pool! :)

I took a break from dog walking and laundry to visit some dear British friends of mine. Unfortunately for me, this break did not involve a trip to the UK. But, sunny Florida ain't bad either! The only touristy thing we did was mini golf, or as they call it, crazy golf, which of course I will forever use now. Yet, I still managed to spy a giant turtle, a family of buzzards, and teenage alligators, all within 20 feet of me. To top that off, 2 count 'em 2 pups were on my flight home. Crazy animal lady heaven!

I love their expressions - they are definitely seasoned veterans!

While in FL I saw a magazine ad for something nothing short of spectacular. Silver Shatter nail polish! Y'all remember how excited I was about OPI's Black Shatter...I believe I posted about it 3 times! Well, in May, OPI is releasing their new Pirates of the Caribbean collection, including pastel shades to coincide with the release of the newest Pirates movie...of which I didn't even know existed ;). And with this collection? Silver Shatter!

Check out the collection here. I'm so stoked because, let's face it - I am not a black wearing person. With my coloring, it just looks so stark against my skin. Grey is my black, so even cooler that this gray is metallic! This shatter polish will have the same features as Black Shatter - it's a top coat that goes over completely dry nail polish, but when it dries it crackles, showing the polish underneath between the cracks. Like this!

As SNL's Miley would say, it's pretty cooool. I've already checked for the product twice, but no dice. I've seen April and May as the release dates online, but I'll keep checking every week just to be safe. You'll hear it here first when I find my pot 'o silver!

CFW 2011 - What Went Down Part 2

Hopefully you're not already sick of me talking about Charleston Fashion Week 2011, because I'm definitely not finished talking about it - it was so much fun!

Friday - I told myself I'd enjoy my day off (didn't have to be anywhere until 5) and hit a park or the beach, paint my nails, go for a walk...well I actually just vegged in my room all day, did some writing, and had a grand old time doing nothing exciting. I was a bit un-enthused with it all, kind of wondering if this whole circus was worth it and if it was even my scene any more. I even toyed with going home early, just missing home and thinking it wasn't for me. Boy am I glad I didn't listen to those ridiculous thoughts.

After my minor philosophical meltdown, I painted my nails (seen left) and got it together. I remembered how much fun it all was - the outfit choosing, the jamming to Friendly Fires while applying makeup, and of course, the rush of excitement from the runway and the pulse of flashbulbs and dance beats. SO Fun! I remembered that THIS was my element.

The Emerging Designer shows again were awesome. But ONE show...well, it took the sartorial cake. Charlotte Hess showed her Isobel & Cleo line, which blew us all away. It was clear before we even voted that she'd win. And guess what? She did! Both the People's Choice and the judges' vote. Charlotte works with knitwear, but her clothing is anything but boring or dowdy. In fact, during the show I wrote down "she makes knitwear exciting!" - me and my blog buddies were all googly eyed over her lush, thick coats and even the sexy bodysuit.

Saturday - Bridal was a lot of fun. Free mimosas, yummy hors d'oeuvres and wedding cake! Last year I wore trouser shorts and oxfords with fishnet socks - a black and brown palette, and looked mighty out of place amongst all the pastel Sunday dresses. This year I still dressed very much myself, but perhaps more appropriately for the occasion. There were lots of dresses in non-traditional colors like grey, heather and blush. And even black! Carol Hannah popped out during Maddison Row's finale (she sells her line there) as she was the designer of the gorgeous black gown. Charleston Fashion Week 2011 - What Went Down Part 1

Due to technical difficulties (read: how do I use this thing?) I was unable to post photos & vids in real time from the tents :(. Then, all a girl wants to do after a day of shows is go back and conk out, so I've got some posting up to do!

So, here's the skinny on my trip to Charleston Fashion Week, Part 1:

Wednesday - Go to bed without packing, but tell myself I'll be ok because I tried on some outfits that evening, and though I nixed 90% of them, fall asleep organizing in my head.

Thursday - Wake up around 6:30 in an attempt to get on the road by 8. By 9, I realize I'd better get in the shower. At 11, I'm finally on the road. I only brought 2 extra pairs of shoes this time, and therefore should be knighted.

I get to the B&B (which I will for sure be staying at again!) after 2 and realize I'd better get a move-on if I'm going to be at the press lounge by 5. I grabbed a bite on King Street and bought a bottle of Riesling - took it back to my room to enjoy later. I did some interviews and hit the Style Lounge until around 7:30 - the doors opened at 7 but only the nerds go inside first. Oh wait...I'm a nerd! The boutique shows weren't terrible, but my girls at Hampden Clothing REALLY turned it out. I wanted EVERYTHING! There were people giving them a standing ovation (including me)...and they're a boutique. Check out the finale below.

A favorite look from Mike Wiernicki

The emerging designers that night were fantastic, and it was hard to pick a favorite. I ended up voting for Mike Wiernicki, and he not only won the People's Choice vote, but also the judges' vote as well.
After the shows, I hit an after party! And by that I mean I walked back to my room, fold up flats on, wedges slung from my finger, jamming to Jamiroquai, and ate pretzel sticks and drank my wine (from a plastic bathroom cup) on the bed. It was divine :). And thank God for screw-off top wine bottles - I'm terrible with cork screws.

I caught up with a few old cronies, including Mr. Mychael Knight, Ayoka Lucas, Candace Chaplin and Najee Wilson. It really is so much more fun when you know people. And thankfully, I made it through the ho-hum stuff with my new friend Jai Marshall. I call her my soul sister from another mister. If you were around us for 5 minutes, you'd know why - turning to each other simultaneously to say the same thing about a design/model, breaking into spontaneous dancing fits, sharing UK love and not missing a beat with names like Bryan Boy, Jil Sander and Florence Welch. Ahhhh validation.

Birthday Nails

Or birthday "nells," as my mom and I like to say. Yup. The big day is here, and it's rather (expectantly) ordinary. Today, March 4, 2011, I have reached the ripe old age of 30, and my mom joins me in a celebration, for today is her birthday too! She had me on her 30th birthday, so you do the math ;). I'm about to go pick up the dude after being apart for a month, and I'm super stoked. Lots to do today, (including my annual blasting of the Beatles' "Birthday" to mum!) but I thought I'd share a little piece of my celebration with you:

I finally, after searching about 5 stores, found the OPI Shatter nail polish (first mentioned here)! So cool, right? You just paint a coat of it over any (dry) nail color - my shade is Sally Hansen XTreme Wear in Mint Sorbet, and it crackles before your very eyes. What do you think - would you rock this look?

Now on to my search for my faves from the OPI Texas collection (only 1/2 pictured), which just *has* to be rocked based on concept alone :). And love it - some of the shades (including "Houston, We Have a Purple" - 2nd from left) are featured on Dell's new laptops!

Yes, I've been MIA for...goodness - 2 weeks now! But now I'm BIA - back in action. I was without internet for a good 10 days, and then had the illness trifecta: bronchitis, sinusitis and middle ear infections :(. After 2 rounds of meds, I'm finally on the mend. But enough about me - let's catch up on some fashionable happenings!

If you weren't aware, Fashion Week is fully underway! I have been itching to get back online and check out all the shows. Let me tell you, if they're even close to the Chinese New Year pictured at right, we are in for a freakin fantastic Fall 2011. So since I have some major weeding to do, we'll get to the best and worst of FW at a later date.

And now, I have a confession. You know how I'm so adamant about hating awards shows and never watching them? I WATCHED THE GRAMMYS. The whole thing! And in true opposite day style, I didn't even look at the red carpet the next day! I actually mostly enjoyed it. Gaga was great (and she finally won one!), though her new tune "Born This Way" is highly reminiscent of Madonna's "Express Yourself." I looooved the Aretha tribute - if you weren't aware, I am a HUGE Aretha Franklin fan. I think she's one of the most amazing musical gifts ever. She couldn't be there, but gave a speech via satellite. Those lucky enough to sing her hits in the tribute were Florence Welch!, Jennifer Hudson (who looked amaaazing), Christina Aguilera, Martina McBride and Yolanda Adams. Props to Florence for rocking her blush gown even when everyone else was in black :). I loved though when my mom (until then unaware of the goddess that is Florence Welch) says "Hey Dad - doesn't she (Florence) look like Laura!?!" I wish! Although we are currently rocking pretty much the exact same hairstyle. I'll take it!

Mick Jagger was surprisingly awesome, and Bob Dylan was characteristically terrible. You know if he came out now, no one would give him a record contract. Cee Lo Green looked like a beautiful bird that was dipped in Elton John sauce, and had a band of puppets. Muse put on a great show, but when they won their Grammy, it was a huge, giant eye roll as the lead singer Matt Bellamy thanked his "beautiful pregnant girlfriend," signaling to where she was in the audience. UGH. Thank God they didn't pan to Kate Hudson, the girlfriend in question. My friend Gayle put it best when she said he was just trying to make sure people knew who he was, as in "Kate Hudson's boyfriend!" And yeah, nobody cares. Like you'll even be in her radar by this time next year.

But all in all I was glad I watched, and glad I got to witness Arcade Fire winning the Album of the Year Grammy, which was shocking. I didn't think the academy was that hip!

Speaking of Fashion Week (well, somewhere up there I did...), I'll fill you in on all the details for Charleston Fashion Week in the next post. It is promising to be a real doozy :).

Kate Barton: The Champion of Hip Hometown Pride + Giveaway!

I'm so excited to introduce you guys to a *super* cool gal, Kathryn Dale Barton. But you can just call her Kate :).

I'd know those trash cans (err...waste bins) anywhere! She must be in Europe here! :)

I alluded to her in a post last week, and I'm excited to give you the skinny. So, Kate and I had a meeting of the minds due to her awesome creations, and my... awesome fanaticism for them.

She's a native of Greenville, but currently lives in the supremely hip (and supremely beautiful!) town of Charlottesville, VA. Swoooon. But, her love of Greenville has never waned. She makes her living as an artist, painting dreamy nature-infused scenes on paper and wood, creating amazing portraits and posters, and even illustrating cover art and children's books. Perhaps the coolest thing Kate is doing right now though, is all about Greenville love. She's started a movement called Grow Your Own Roots, and it's bloody brilliant. To promote not only your favorite town but also local arts, Kate's designed adorable Grow Your Own Roots - Greenville tees for Greenville lovers to wear their pride.

After her Grow Your Own Roots - Charlottesville tees were such a big hit, she decided to make a series for where she grew her own roots, Greenville. Kate based the design off a series of poster paintings she created that were inspired by Alphonse Mucha's work. Lucky for us she's made these awesome works of art accessible to and wearable by the masses - us! - and in a variety of colors...even for guys!

So I know your next question is, where can I get one!? Kate's got her tees available at several Greenville retailers (and hopefully even more soon!), so there's plenty of options to get you on your way to being the coolest person in Greenville garb.

Golden Globes 2011 Red Carpet Roundup

It goes without saying that I didn't watch the Globes last night - and can you blame me? The AFC Championship game was on!! :) But, I did hear that host Ricky Gervais had a controversial night of jokes. Things about Charlie Sheen, Robert Downey, Jr., and even pointing out Bruce Willis in the audience as "Ashton Kutcher's dad." Oooooh, burn! (I'm not sure for who though...) Half of Hollywood was not amused, the other half thought he was brilliant. But that's not the real reason for this post of course, it's the red carpet gowns! As always, click to enlarge. The Bold and the Beautiful:

Olivia: Oh my gawwwd that dress is so pretty. And in chocolate brown! Pretty as a princess. So glad she went very low key with the hair - kept it from looking too princessy.

Kyra looks great, no? Not many people can pull off that tangerine hue. Thank your stylist for not putting you in bright red/orange lips. People always seem to do that with bright dresses, and it doesn't always look good. This is so effortlessly glam though, and looks like she isn't even trying.
Score another for Marchesa! Amy looks amazing. That navy really looks great with her coloring, and the giant rosettes play off nicely with the mermaid silhouette. It's super sexy, but still very sophisticated.
Eva: The neckline of this dress hooked me. And the cap sleeves! I really love everything about it. The skirt is kind of like an upside down lily - I love the unique train on it. This is how you glam up basic black.

Green With Envy:

Pretty little maids, all in a row. Green was apparently the color of the night, seen here in emerald, hunter and forest. Green is a pretty universally flattering shade, and that's quite evident on these ladies - they are all absolutely glowing! Angelina Jolie also wore the shade, but I didn't care for her look - too matronly, TOO 70s.

I Can Dig:

I like how all these colors go together :). Emma - I thought that was Kelly Ripa at first! Emma's auburn hair would have looked much better with this. And SOME kind of jewelry.
Natalie's is kind of kitschy, but it works, and it's very pretty on her.
It's funny - I knew without even looking that this was a Versace dress on January. I just like her whole look here. I think the bodice doesn't do the best job on her boobs, but overall she looks super fierce.
This look is a departure of sorts for Anne, in that it's not a silhouette she usually dons. I like it on her - it's a bit risky (those puffy shoulders), but overall she carries it off well.

Stop! In the Naaame of Fug:

Julianne: I knew immediately this was Lanvin - the puffed sleeve gave it away. Don't get me wrong, I love a 1-shoulder dress, but her left arm looks like a giant ham hock in that thing.
Leighton- 2 words: Corpse Bride.
HK: I also instantly knew this crazy circus tent was Marc Jacobs. Does she not look like a healthier Rachel Zoe here? Heidi usually does SHORT and TIGHT, and she does it well. So what's with the hippie dippy silliness? And no one ever says they actually want to wear the color of burnt cheese...with hot pink!
Oh Milla. I adore you but this screams bride from 1995! You deserve better.
Halle: Don't freak out, but I think you may have left your actual DRESS at home.

Fashion Buffet: Turning Over a New (Honeysuckle) Leaf

Well, I may have been snowed in until Thursday, but that doesn't mean the world comes to a standstill. (It means Greenville does, like really and truly, ohmygawd winter will kill us all, but not the world.) Some great things have happened in the fashion world though, even though some of the places of occurrence also had snow!!! Really though, I'm so over it. So over the snow, the ice, the cold...I was actually over it by about November. Please transport me to the land of cardigans over coats! So without further adieu, I give you your Friday feast.


Orla Kiely bag, Orla Kiely for Citroën cars.

Keen on Kiely:

You may not know the name Orla Kiely, but you've no doubt seen her designs. (First of all, her name is super cute, right? She's Irish, based out of London. COLLECTIVE SIGH.) She makes clothing, but she's probably most recognized for her adorable leaf print bags and housewares. She actually did a housewares line for Target a couple of years ago, and now, she's teamed up with French car maker Citroën! She'll add her mod prints and graphics to their DS3 model, shown at left. Would I actually drive one of these? No. But it's still adorable. I'd go so far as to say I'd even ride in one :).

No Halt for Alt:

Well, in the last Fashion Buffet I mentioned that Carine Roitfeld, beloved editor of French Vogue was leaving. We now know her replacement, Emmanuelle Alt - a logical choice. Ms. Alt was previously a fashion director for the magazine after having been at French Elle for 20 years, and she's also a stylist and favorite of street style photographers. I personally love her style - always with relaxed tees, Balmain jackets and super skinny pants (and in this photo, leatha!!) - she's the epitome of tough Parisian chic. So, while critics worry she may not have the spark that Mme. Roitfeld did, I say hell - give the kid a chance. It's not like she's a newbie. Carine trained her well so I'm sure French Vogue will continue to kick American Vogue's ass for many years to come :).

Pig Vogue:

Speaking of Vogue, check out this still from the upcoming Muppet movie, also starring Amy Adams and Jason Segal. In the movie, the Muppets have all gone their separate ways in life, with their fans trying to reunite them. Miss Piggy, naturally, has gone on to be the editor of French Vogue. I mean...does it get any more delicious than this? First Carine, then Emmanuelle, now Piggy? It's like the French Vogue trifecta!

New Year, New Tone

Longtime followers may remember this time last year, when I unveiled Pantone's color of the year for 2010. Last year it was gorgeous turquoise, and let me tell you, that truly did shape the year for color trends. Everywhere from design blogs to designers to social inspiration sites (like Pinterest!) were dripping with the shade. I can't say for sure if it had an influence, but my love of the hue was revitalized, causing me to buy several vintage items in turquoise. Thanks a lot! Well, it's official - this year's color is....drumroll....Honeysuckle. It's a lovely rich medium cool-toned pink, guaranteed to brighten your mood. I'm generally not a fan of pink, but this looks like about 3 different blushes I have, so I approve :). (Does anyone else not associate honeysuckle with pink at all? I hear honeysuckle and I think white & yellow!)

People's Choice Awards 2011 Red Carpet Roundup

It's been so long since I've had the chance to snicker at red carpet disasters, I almost forgot the platform even existed! Lucky for us, we are now officially in the midst of awards season. Hooraaaay! I mean, who more deserving of pats on the back, over extended hoopla and recognition than self-involved elitist celebrities! And as always, my disclaimer is that I don't actually watch the shows. So, perhaps a wretched gown exudes life and glory in its natural, live state, but I'm just going on the pictures, people. I have too much football to watch to be bothered with those things. All pics courtesy of Instyle.com.

The Good:

Mila "Meg Griffin" Kunis looks...well smashing! I am jealous of people that can wear that gorgeous mushroom color without looking ill (like me). The sleek hair is very pretty, but I do wish she would have done something to it. A little curl at the ends never hurt anyone.

Well, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I love Khloe's whole look. Check out her new red hair! I love it - it looks really good on her. The color and silhouette of the dress are very NOW, and I love that she paired it with an animal print clutch. I mean, simple but polished and a little bit cheeky - it's perfect.

Malin looks great. The (white!) dress is super cute. I mean, those pleats are killer. The cap sleeves keep it modern and the curve hugging fabric keep it sexy. This is how to wear white. Exceeeeept, I'm not a fan of the red clutch with red shoes. Ack(erman...)! It's just too matchy matchy. Swap the clutch for a gold bag and you've got a winner. I would also love to see a necklace. Just sayin. PS - Score 2 for J. Mendel, eh?

Ok, I had to include this little Disney bebop, Selena Gomez, who's like supremely pretty. Love the Lanvin-esque dress on the left. It's simple but fun and flirty, and looks great on her skin. (I swear, this was like the night of a thousand nude platforms, right?) Dress 2, while mullet in it's silhouette, is very sexy. Looks like Cavalli actually. Fun print, comfy and chic. It's not too provocative either, so I approve. But can I just express my extreme annoyance at the fact that this chick who can't even drive yet gets to wear 2, count 'em TWO fabulous dresses on one night? The only time I did that was when I got married!

The So Close:

Taylor: Again with nude platforms! I don't know, it's a cute enough dress, but the mesh kills it for me.
Cat: Something's off. Lose the goth/Victorian belt for one, or if you must have it, at least have a different color. It's like...the black and black are competing! Also not a fan of the all black accessories. But besides allll that, fab!
Kaley: Well now I feel kinda bad. I read that she was concealing a broken leg. But still! That's no excuse to don the nightgown my mom wore in the 70s cinched with a Forever 21 grommet belt. I really don't care for the makeup either.

Oh Julie how I love you so. In the thumbnail this dress looked cute...but full size, eesh. If you chopped off those saccharine ruffles on the bottom (go ahead - put your hand up to cover them), it would be MILES better. Otherwise, you rock.

Kourtney Kardashian (sorry - you're name's too long for my photo caption, doll) The silhouette isn't bad. It's everywhere, but it's not bad. The color looks great too. And the hair! But honey. It looks like white cheddar Cheetos have been loosed on your frock!

Think you can handle some fugs too? It's funny, there really weren't any gowns worth talking about, fab or fug. Everything was pretty boring. Here's hoping the other shows bring us something worth talking about.

The Sheesh:

I have no idea who chick 1 is, but I do know that's an awful dress.
Tisdale: It's amazing to me how someone so young can look so old. She just looks like one big tan. I hate the print, I hate everything.
Lucy: Again, no clue. As for the dress, it's wearing her. And, the girl is wearing pantyhose. Case closed.
Natalie: I love that when I saw this I went "Geez that makes her look pregnant!" And then I remembered she IS :). Either way, while I like the idea of the dress' colors and thick black seaming, those tiered ruffles have got to go. If there's one thing that can make a preggo look more preggo...
Teenage Nightmare: Look, honey. You've got your shtick, and that's great. I just feel like the über glam neon baby doll look has run its course. Besides, you basically wore that dress already.

As promised, here is my Anna Dello Russo perfume bottle on display.

Yes. In a baseball display case. This position is not her final resting place, as this was taken in the craft room on top of one of my organizers. But, I do plan to keep her in there for inspiration, and I do plan to keep her in a baseball case. That's the one I had on hand, but of course I'd like to get one that fits the contents a little better. ADR deserves better than plywood, no?
